Avoided Car, Hit Snowbank
Newtown Police report Ethan Detvongsa, 24, of Chula Vista, Calif., operating a 2020 Ram Promaster, was traveling northbound in a driveway on Huntingtown Road at 12:43 pm February 13. Robin Phelps, 65, of Newtown, operating a 2017 Kia Forte, was traveling northbound on Huntingtown Road. Delvongsa started to pull out of the driveway onto Huntingtown, and Phelps steered right to avoid Detvongsa’s vehicle and struck a snowbank.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
Detvongsa was issued a written warning for failure to grant right of way from a private drive.
Rear-Ended On Church Hill
Newtown Police report Maggie Dittmar, 36, of Newtown, operating a 2020 Chevrolet Traverse, was traveling west on Church Hill Road at 8:37 pm February 13. She was traveling behind a 2014 Volvo Xc60 operated by Kenneth Chimileski, 73, of Sandy Hook. Dittmar rear-ended Chimileski’s vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Dittmar’s vehicle was towed.
Dittmar was issued an infraction for a charge unspecified in the report.
Stuck On Guardrail
Newtown Police report Ryan Deakin, 37, of Brookfield, operating a 2024 Toyota Camry, was traveling eastbound on Wasserman Way at 10:50 pm February 16. While traveling downhill and attempting to negotiate a left-hand curve, Deakin’s vehicle slid on the snow and ice, hitting a curb and leaving the roadway. Deakin’s vehicle slid on the wrong side of a guardrail before scraping along 50’ of it, and when the vehicle stopped, the driver’s side front tire went up and over the rail.
No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed.
Deakin was issued a verbal warning for traveling too fast for conditions.
Collision In Intersection
Newtown Police report Debra Ramos, 65, of Naugatuck, operating a 2021 Hyundai Tucson, was traveling southbound on Berkshire Road at 9:18 pm February 22. Kayla Mascoll, 20, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2021 Mazda CX-5, was traveling eastbound in the left-most travel lane of two. Ramos attempted to turn left onto Toddy Hill Road in front of Mascoll, and struck Mascoll’s vehicle.
Mascoll was transported to Danbury Hospital for suspected minor injuries. Both vehicles were towed.
Ramos was issued an infraction for failure to grant right of way at an intersection.
Jeep Hits Volvo
Newtown Police report Margaret Kokorda, 22, of Monroe, operating a 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee, was traveling southbound on South Main Street at 11:46 am February 23. Andromaque Ferdinand, 46, of Brookfield, operating a 2024 Volvo Xc90, was traveling southbound on South Main Street ahead of Kokorda. Ferdinand stopped for traffic ahead waiting to make a left turn. Kokorda did not stop in time and rear-ended Ferdinand’s vehicle.
Both Kokorda and Ferdinand sustained possible minor injuries but neither were transported to Danbury Hospital. Both vehicles were towed.
Kokorda was issued an infraction for following too close.
Struck Mailbox
Newtown Police report James Devendorf, 53, of Danbury, operating a 2008 Jeep Wrangler, was traveling westbound on Berkshire Road at 4:03 pm February 24. Devendorf’s vehicle went off the roadway and onto a lawn before, according to a witness, striking a mailbox. Devendorf left the scene and was later stopped by Newtown Police on Main Street near Mile Hill Road. Devendorf said he left a note in the mailbox with his contact and insurance information.
No injuries were reported. The vehicle was not towed.
Devendorf was issued a verbal warning for failure to drive in the proper lane.
Hit Car Leaving Driveway
Newtown Police report Jane Brady, 55, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2022 Toyota Sienna, was in a private lot on South Main Street at 5:59 pm February 25. Lila Accousti, 16, of Newtown, operating a 2004 Infiniti FX35, was traveling northbound on South Main Street. Brady exited the lot and collided with the rear of Accousti’s vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
Brady was issued an infraction for failure to grant right of way from a public driveway.
Incident In Parking Lot
Newtown Police report Denise Partridge, 75, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2024 Subaru Crosstrek, was backing up in a parking lot on Keating Farms Avenue at 4:12 pm February 26. Her vehicle hit an unoccupied 2017 Range Rover Sport owned by Michael Early of Newtown.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.
Left Drive, Struck Car
Newtown Police report Timothy Corkery, 36, of New Milford, operating a 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee, was leaving a driveway on The Boulevard at 4:25 pm February 26. Joan Baumgart, 66, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2023 Kia Sportage, was driving on The Boulevard. Corkery’s vehicle struck Baumgart’s vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
Corkery was issued an infraction for failure to grant right of way at a private driveway and a verbal warning for operating an unregistered motor vehicle.
Arrested As Felon In Possession Of Ammunition
Newtown Police report that while on routine patrol, officers stopped a vehicle for failure to display a front registration plate at 1 pm February 27. After a brief investigation, Michael Rivera, 42, of Stratford, was found to be a convicted felon in possession of firearms ammunition, and was placed under arrest. He was charged with illegal operation of a motor vehicle without minimum insurance, improper use of a marker plate, failure to display a license plate, illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under suspension, and criminal possession of ammunition by a convicted felon.
He was released with a court date of March 11 in Danbury Superior Court.
Medical Emergency Leads To Collision
Newtown Police report Andrew Hsu, 31, of Newtown, operating a 2018 Mazda CX-3 Touring, was traveling westbound on Castle Hill Road at 7:10 pm March 4. While negotiating a right-hand curve in the road, Hsu suffered a medical emergency and his vehicle continued straight, crossed over the eastbound lane and eastbound shoulder, and struck some bushes and a rock.
Hsu was treated and released by EMS at the scene. The vehicle was towed.
No enforcement action was taken due to the medical emergency.
