Nighthawk Grapplers Compete Against Best In New England
Newtown High School’s wrestling team had strong representation at the 57th Annual New England championships, held in Providence, R.I. March 3 and 4.
Fisher Stites, a junior in the 170 pound weight class, placed third, and Luca Manfredi, a senior at 152, placed 6th. This event included the top 325-plus state qualifying wrestlers across Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhodes Island, New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont. The Nighthawks placed 15th overall against 167 schools.
Stites went 4-1, defeating the No. 3 and No. 7 ranked wrestlers in New England. Manfredi went 4-3, defeating the No. 5, No. 9, and No. 11 ranked wrestlers in New England.
Sophomores Kenna Gioffre and Marc Maurath also qualified for the tournament and wrestled through two days of championship and consolation rounds. Maurath went 3-2, beating the No. 2 wrestler from Massachusetts and No. 3 grappler from New Hampshire. Gioffre defeated the No. 6 wrestler from Massachusetts.
