A safe boating course may be the only sign of spring hidden in this month’s frigid forecast. Sandy Hook-based Leaps of Faith (LOF) Adaptive Skiers is hosting a Boating License Course on Saturday, March 22, from 8 am to 4 pm at the Newtown United Methodist Church, 92 Church Hill Road. Completion of this course will qualify registrants for their Connecticut Boating & Personal Water Craft License.

Registration is $75 and includes all course materials and lunch, snacks, and refreshments will be served. All ages welcome, but register before March 18. The US Coast Guard Auxiliary will provide course instruction.

All proceeds will benefit LOF’s adaptive sports programs, which provide free adaptive snow and waterskiing events for disabled individuals and veterans. Funding the LOF, “will in turn help the veterans participate in water sports, etc,” said Joel Zeisler, LOF president.

Attendance “has been tough because of the cold this winter,” he said. “We need the weather to break.”

He said, “Last year’s boating license course set a record attendance level for the state of Connecticut. We attribute this success to having the best instructors, our central location, and our reasonable rate for the course.” He encourages early registration.
