John Mitchell, 84, of Dunedin, Fla., and a longtime former resident of Newtown, died peacefully at home March 7. He was born October 11, 1931, in Lochgilphead, Scotland, and was the son of Helen Auld Smith.

He attended Milford High School, and was a veteran of the United States Air Force. Mr Mitchell was a former employee of General Electric.

After his retirement, Mr Mitchell split his time between Warren, Vt., and Dunedin.

An avid golfer, he was also a friend to everyone he met, and beloved by every member of his family.

His four daughters, Laurie, Donna, Margaret, and Becky; all eight of his beloved grandchildren; and his former wife, Norma Mitchell, survive Mr Mitchell.

A service in his memory will take place Saturday, March 12, at 10 am, at the Trinity Episcopal Church on Main Street in Newtown.
