Mavs Battle In Playoffs
The White Mavs, Newtownâs fourth grade boysâ travel basketball team, competed in the Milford League playoffs, and reached the championship game this past weekend. The Blue Mavs, another fourth grade squad, meanwhile, participated in the Newtown League Playoffs this week. Game summaries are as follows:
New Canaan 39, White Mavs 25: The White Mavs traveled to Jonathan Law High School on Sunday morning for the Milford League championship game versus the undefeated team from New Canaan. Newtownâs foes jumped out to an early 14-0 lead, but the tough young White Mavs never gave up, cutting the lead to single digits at the half. Strong inside play by Jack Mulligan and Kyle Good got the White Mavs back on track, while Jack Kuligowski penetrated the paint for some transition layups. Sammy Eppers and Max Wrage played smothering defense on the New Canaan guards, and Kyle Sullivan started to heat up from the outside. Jack Lydon started the scoring in the fourth quarter with two big free throws, while Charlie Eppers and Patrick Oberstadt kept the White Mavs in the game with great rebounding. Mulligan ended the game with a 3-pointer at the buzzer, but it wasnât enough as the great outside shooting of New Canaan ultimately proved to be too much to overcome. The White Mavs finished runners-up in the Milford League with a final record of 9-3.
Blue Mavs 35, St. Teresa 3rd Grade 18: The Blue Mavs edged out the St Teresa third grade squad at Newtown Youth Academy to advance to the second round of the Newtown League playoffs. Josh Taylor and Joey Rios led the offense with a combined 21 points. Nick Kalra added 6 and Keenan Murphy put up 4 and grabbed 7 rebounds. Liam Murphy, Zack Droukas, and Dillon Robinson were relentless on defense, forcing multiple St. Teresa turnovers. Kieran Coffey and Drew Mitchell helped move the ball down the court and were strong on the boards. The Blue Mavs will face the tough St. Teresa fourth grade squad in the semi-final round next weekend.
