Newtown High Schoolâs boysâ swimming and diving team competed in the South-West Conference championships this past week. The Nighthawks, with 111 points, placed ninth among 11 schools. Brookfield, with 597 points, was the meet winner. The competition began with the diving portion at New Fairfield High on Thursday, March 1, and the swimming events the next night at Masuk High in Monroe.
Newtown Coach Zach Gauvin continues to be impressed with the progress of his team members, noting that almost everyone in the lineup recorded their best times.
âThe guys swam unbelievably [on March 2]. We had nearly a perfect day in terms of best times. I think all the hard work that they put in this season really showed on Friday night,â Gauvin said. âThe SWC Championships are always an exciting meet and this one was no exception. However, this isnât the end of the road and were looking forward to finishing strong at the state championship meets in the coming weeks.â
Connecticutâs class championships, followed by the State Open, will take place in mid March.
