Joan Elizabeth (Whittle) Supp, of Heritage Village, Southbury, Connecticut, died peacefully in her sleep after a sudden illness and went to be with her Savior and Lord on November 18, 2022, three days short of her 93rd birthday.

She was born November 21, 1929, in Ridgewood, N.J., the daughter of Lloyd and Eunice Whittle. Joan grew up in Westport and Newtown, Conn. While in Westport, Mayor La Guardia taught Joan to swim at Compo Beach. While in Newtown, Joan grew up in farm country and completed her grammar school education at the one room schoolhouse on Huntingtown Road. She had a horse by the name of Molly and a cow by the name of Dolly.

She met Joseph Supp, from Ansonia, Conn., (a World War II veteran), on a blind date while in college at UConn, and married that short but handsome man on June 18, 1949.

She raised her family in Newtown and Danbury, Conn.; received a BA in English from Western Connecticut State College; and loved teaching second and fourth grade at Immanuel Lutheran School in Danbury for 12 years.

Joan and Joseph lived in Newtown from 1949 to 1959, in Danbury from 1959 to 1981, Bradley Beach, N.J., from 1981 to 2002, and lived in Heritage Village in Southbury from 2003 up to their passing.

She and her husband made many good friends wherever they lived. All the family and friends remember Joan as a gentle and loving person.

She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph, in 2020; brother Donald Whittle; sister Eunice Peck; and daughter-in-law Barbara.

She is survived by her brother, William Whittle; three adult children: Joseph (Greenwich, Conn.), Michael and wife Patty (Garland, Maine), and Steven and wife, Melinda (Cherry Valley, N.Y.); seven adult grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.

The family and close friends will gather in Cherry Valley, N.Y. for the burial of both Joan’s and Joseph’s ashes later this year in June. Ottman Funeral Home, 22 Church Street, Cherry Valley, NY 13320 (telephone 607-264-8141) is taking care of the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers or cards, please donate to one or more of Joan’s favorite charities: Samaritan’s Purse, St Joseph’s Indian School, Feeding America, Wounded Warrior Project, or Paralyzed Veterans of America.
