Taught and lead by volunteer Hanna Roehrs , a group of weavers were part of the first workshop offered at HealingNewtown in the winter of 2013. That group has continued and expanded, and their work will now be the focus of an exhibit at C.H. Booth Library, 25 Main Street.

Located in the showcase outside the Children’s Department, the exhibit — a collaboration between the library and Newtown Cultural Arts Commission (NCAC) — will be on display by the end of this week during regular hours: Monday through Thursday, 9:30 am-8 pm; Friday, 11 am-5 pm; Saturday, 9:30 am-5 pm; and Sunday, noon to 5 pm.

The group, all novices when they began, has been working on looms and yarn contributed that winter as well as equipment purchased with the financial backing of NCAC.

Ms Roehrs, a weaver for 18 years, works on her own projects while overseeing the group’s progress. There are table looms and floor looms, and the projects range from dishtowels to felted pocketbooks as well as scarves made by the children of members.

One new member brought in a loom left to her by her grandfather.

The group experiments with colors as well as weaves, creating “samplers” to see how one color and weave plays off another.

Membership is not limited to Newtown residents. The group meets on Mondays.

For information on joining e-mail Ms Roehrs at IHMT40@gmail.com.
