Gioffre Wins State Open Title As Hawk Wrestlers Come In Second As A Team
Newtown High School’s wrestling team came in second among 85 teams in the State Open, held February 28 and March 1, at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven. The Nighthawks were led by 120 pound weight division champion Kenna Gioffre along with a pair of runners-up and a third-place finisher. As a team, Newtown scored 137 points; Xavier of Middletown was first with 189.5
Gioffre posted a 2-1 decision over Ledyard’s Lukas Boxley in the finals and became Newtown's eighth State Open Champion. Antonio Arguello was second at 150, dropping a hard-fought 5-4 decision to Fairfield Warde’s Dominick Spadaro in the pinnacle bout. Marc Maurath reached the 165 finals before losing a close one. 14-12 to East Hartford’s Drayvn Roberts. Jake Maddox placed third with a 17-1 technical fall won over Xavier’s Cael Loria in the 157 division final.
Owen Blair, Ty Jorgenson, Shaun Daoust, Grayson Renkert, and Andrew Corey scored important points for the team.
Maddox became the first NHS wrestler to accomplish earning his 100th career win in only two years; the sophomore still has two years of high school wrestling ahead.
