Occupation: Iâm retired now, but for 30 years I was an administrative assistant for American Wire Corp here in Sandy Hook. I was a warden of the Borough for 19 years and am now the senior burgess. Since 1995 Iâve been a member of the Newtown District Board of Health representing the Borough. Iâm the past founder, director, and coach of the Girlsâ Basketball League affiliated with Parks and Recreation. Iâm a member of the newly formed Mary Hawley Society, and Iâm president of the Newtown Country Club Realty Corp, and Iâve been past president and treasurer of the Newtown Country Club. Currently I am the president of the Newtown Country Club Ladiesâ Golf Association. I keep busy, but I like that.
Family: I was married for 50 years to Jim âMr Post Officeâ Crick. He died a year and a half ago. He was a great dad, âPoppy,â husband, and friend to all. We have three children, Maureen Owen, Jim III, and Michael; a son-in-law, Cramer Owen; two daughters-in-law, Leslie and Lisa; six grandchildren, Will, Ben, the twins Mitchell and Adam, Emily, and James IV. Matt, our oldest grandson, is with his âPoppyâ in heaven watching over all of us. I also have a brother, Lee W. Glover and his wife, Pat, in North Carolina.
Pets: I donât have any pets now. Weâve always loved Boston terriers, though, and had three of them over the years. And Jim had his chickens that followed him everywhere.
How long have you lived in Newtown? Iâve lived here all my life. Iâm a tenth generation of the Glover family here in Newtown and direct descendent of John Glover, one of Newtownâs founders.
What do you like to do in your free time? I love to read. You can go anywhere when you read. I love to play at my piano keyboard, golf, travel, and spend time with friends and family. Weâve taken several trips together and all we do is laugh and have a great time.
Do you have a favorite book? Right now, Iâve just finished 90 Minutes in Heaven by Don Piper. Itâs a wonderful book and gave me such peace. And I like Tom Clancy. I do like mysteries and I like history.
Do you have a favorite travel destination? That would be Hilton Head, S.C., where Jim III and his family live. Itâs a fun place. They have great friends, and itâs a nice atmosphere. There are a lot of nice golf courses, too.
What is the biggest change you have seen in Newtown? Traffic! Speed! Housing where you would never believe there would be a house, and of course, the increase in population.
What is the best thing about Newtown? The Borough. The Main Street with the historic homes, streetlights, sewers, water, sidewalks, and being near all the amenities, which is wonderful. My feeling is that I would never want to live anywhere but in the Borough.
Do you have a personal philosophy? Life is constant change and learning to cope with the changes. You canât look back. You have to be strong and stay healthy. But thereâs always someone worse off, so you have to give back.
