Career Center Lists Available Scholarships

The Newtown High School Career Center publicizes all scholarships of which it is notified.

A few of the scholarships, typically national ones, request that money be enclosed with the application. The Career Center believes that students should not have to pay to apply for scholarships. If a student chooses to apply for a scholarship that charges a fee, however, the Career Center strongly advises that he or she first check its authenticity through the FTC Consumer Response Center, www.ftc.gov, 877-FTC-HELP; the National Fraud Information Center, www.fraud.org, 1-800-876-7060; or the Better Business Bureau, www.bbg.org or 703-276-0100.

The following scholarships have been announced:

Connecticut State USBC Association Scholar of the Year — A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating high school senior from Connecticut whose mother, father, grandmother, or grandfather is a sanctioned member of the Connecticut State USBC Association (for men and women bowlers).

Applicants must be planning to continue their education in the summer or fall. The winner will receive the scholarship at an awards luncheon in June. The selection committee will interview finalists. Applications are available in the Career Center and are due by March 15.

Financial Planning Association Scholarship — One $1,500 scholarship is available to a college-bound high school senior from a public school in Fairfield County who is interested in pursuing a course of study that will result in a degree in business, accounting, or related business field and lead to a possible career in financial planning.

The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic achievement, character, financial need and career potential. Applications are available in the Career Center. The deadline is April 1.

Newtown Bridle Lands Association Memorial Scholarship — NBLA is pleased to offer a $500 scholarship in memory of Linda Souza to a graduating high school senior from Newtown High School or the Ellis Clark Regional Agri-Science and Technical Center.

Applicants must be a current resident of Newtown OR have a parent or guardian who is a current member of NBLA. The applicant must also be accepted to a post-high school program leading to a degree in equine science, veterinary science, or the environmental sciences including, but not limited to, agriculture, animal husbandry, ecological studies, or forestry. Applications are available in the Career Center. The deadline is April 1.

Sons of Portugal Scholarship — High school seniors from the greater Danbury area who are of Portuguese descent living at least one full year in the local area may apply. The applicant or the applicant’s parent(s) must be an active member in a Portuguese cultural organization.

Awards will be made on the basis of: Portuguese community involvement, scholastic record, character, and evidence of leadership. Applications are available at PortugueseCulturalCenter.com or the Career Center and must be postmarked by April 1.

Juvenile Arthritis College Scholarships — The Arthritis Foundation is offering three $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors or college undergraduates with juvenile arthritis or another rheumatic disease. Students must be residents of Connecticut.

A volunteer committee judges scholarship applications based on academic achievement, disease impact, and volunteer service to the school or community. Copies of applications are available by mail, e-mail, or fax. Contact the foundation at info.sne@arthritis.org or 800-541-8350. The application deadline is April 11.

Hawley School PTA Scholarship — The Hawley School PTA will award scholarships to two graduating seniors from NHS who attended Hawley School. Applicants must be ranked academically in the top 50 percent of their graduating class and be accepted to a post-high school academic program.

Applicants should demonstrate the elements of character, achievement, and dedication representative of the highest goals of education at Hawley School. An interview with the PTA Scholarship Committee is required. The PTA chairperson will contact applicants to schedule an interview. The Career Center has applications. The deadline for completed applications is April 11.

Dennis Malone Memorial Scholarship Award Program — This award program, sponsored by the Connecticut Parks Association, is named in honor of Dennis Malone, the former president and scholarship founder of the association. The program is open to applicants who are high school graduating seniors planning to attend an accredited two- or four-year college and pursue a career in park management, forestry, horticulture, agronomy, or a closely related field.

Scholarships may be awarded up to $1,000, depending on the number of recipients. Selection is based on financial need, academic achievement, and involvement in activities related to the intended course of study. Applications may be downloaded from the Announcements section of the CPA website at CTParks.org. All applications are due by April 18.

Young Agriculturalist Achievement Award — One $1,000 award will be presented to a deserving Fairfield County young person aged 16–25 who is involved with any of the numerous and varied aspects of agriculture. Applicants are expected to attend the annual Fairfield County Farm Bureau Annual Meeting in October and must not have been a recipient of this award in the past.

Applications are available in the Career Center. The deadline is April 25.

Newtown Scholarship Association — The Newtown Scholarship Association provides scholarship awards to graduating high school seniors from Newtown who plan to continue their education. The scholarships are based on financial need. All applicants are required to have a personal interview with the Awards Committee. Applications are available from Mrs Latowicki in the Career Center or may downloaded from Naviance. All applicants must see Mrs Latowicki to schedule their interview time with the Selection Committee. The deadline for all applications is April 11, 2008.

The Links, Inc Scholarship — The Fairfield County Chapter of the Links, Incorporated will award one scholarship of $3,000 to a graduating African American high school senior from greater Danbury who will enroll full-time at an accredited college/university, junior college or technical school. Candidates must have a “B” GPA and be in need of financial assistance. Participation in school activities and community service/volunteerism is considered. Applications are available in the Career Center. The deadline for applications is March 31. Scholarships are awarded for one academic year but recipients may reapply yearly for renewals.

Kohl’s Kids Who Care Scholarships — This national scholarship program recognizes outstanding young people, ages 6–18, for their volunteer activities in the community. Every Kohl’s store location will be involved in this scholarship program. Two local winners from each store will receive a $50 gift card; 190 regional winners will receive a $1,000 scholarship and 10 national winners will be awarded a $5,000 scholarship and a $1,000 grant to his or her charity of choice. Interested students should download a nomination form from the community relations area at KohlsCorporation.com. Completed nominations must be returned to any Kohl’s Customer Service Desk by March 15.

Education Connection Scholarships — Two Education Connection scholarships of $750 are for high school seniors who plan to pursue a career that relates to the organization’s stated mission and programs. (The mission statement and programs are detailed on the back of the application.) Applicants should also show a long-term commitment to community service. Applications are available in the Career Center or at EducationConnection.org. All paperwork must be received by April 11.

HGLHC, PFLAG, TCC and True Colors Scholarships — Four community organizations will provide scholarship opportunities to high school seniors who are members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender communities. Together they will award a minimum of $3,500 to Connecticut students who are pursuing higher education. The Career Center has information packets which provide details of these opportunities and indicate their individual April deadlines.

Gerald D. Roche Family Scholarship and Community Scholarship Group Scholarship — Two scholarships for $1,500 will be awarded to high school seniors from NHS for use during the first year of college. One is named for the Gerald Roche family and one named for the Community Scholarship Group. Selections will be based on the student’s demonstrated need and the determination to succeed. Applicants must complete the one-page application and return it to Mrs Latowicki in the Career Center by the April 2.
