The center corridor of Newtown Municipal Center was teeming with people and activity for a few hours on February 22, when the Society of Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN) hosted a reception for "Color In Winter Art Show & Sale."the presentation of the exhibition, and a month before the exhibition is scheduled to close, last Wednesday's celebration was a midshow gathering. "Color In January" is on view weekdays through March 31."Color In Winter Art Show & Sale" can be viewed weekdays between 7:30 am and 5 pm at Newtown Municipal Center, 3 Primrose Street, through March 31. All works on view are available for purchase.

Held a few weeks into

SCAN member-artists, friends, and other guests all shared the floor space of the town's government center, enjoying refreshments and taking in the art representing the talent of 39 members of the local artists' collective.

Paintings dominate this show, with a small percentage of illustrations sharing some of the exhibition space.

SCAN members were invited to offer up to three of their original, previously unshown works for "Color in January," and those responding have offered landscapes, seascapes, portraits, abstracts, and still life works.

In one alcove, a large gold painted wood frame holds a rotating collection of small works. Paintings and line drawings of myriad subjects fill the frame, with each work priced at $25. All proceeds from the sale of these paintings are earmarked for the SCAN Scholarship Fund, which awards funds to graduating high school seniors who have been accepted to an art school.

As paintings were purchased during the reception, their new owners were able to pluck them from the display and take them home that afternoon. Artist Pam Danneman happily helped one show attendee remove one of her paintings from the small works collection that afternoon.

New small works will be put onto the frame as space opens during the run of "Color In Winter."

Guests had a large selections of hors d'oeuvres and soft drinks to choose from on Wednesday afternoon. The reception was preceded by an artist's demonstration, with Charles Ray offering a presentation on creating a seaport scene with oils.
