John McNulty
John Francis McNulty, 87, of Newtown died peacefully at home on March 5, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Geraldine (Griffin) McNulty for 60 years. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on April 12, 1929, son of Anne and Frank McNulty.
MrÃÂ McNulty graduated from Bishop Laughlin High School and from the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y. Immediately after graduating from Kings Point, he joined the United States Navy and served proudly as a chief engineer in the Submarine Service, stationed in Groton. He served our nation during the Korean War.
Upon leaving the Navy, MrÃÂ McNulty joined Consolidated Edison of New York as a mechanical engineer, as part of the Indian Point start-up team for the first nuclear power plant in New York State. He had various management positions in Consolidated Edison, including plant manager of the East River Power Plant. After retiring from Consolidated Edison, he joined Ebasco Services, located in the World Trade Center in New York. He was a licensed New York State professional engineer and licensed New York State master rigger.
Mr McNulty and Geraldine raised their four children and many loyal dogs in White Plains, N.Y. He was a very active member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish in Valhalla, N.Y., and volunteered through many organizations.
Just prior to his retirement, the McNultys moved to their beloved home in Newtown. He became an active member of St Rose of Lima Parish and other volunteer organizations. Mr McNulty was a Knight of Columbus for 70 years and served as Grand Knight, St Rose Council #185. He was also a member of the St Rose Men's Club, helped with the annual carnival, and volunteered for the homeless through AmeriCares. He also found time to teach physics at Norwalk Community College.
Mr McNulty loved boating, woodworking, gardening, and home improvement projects, but most of all he cherished his time with his 11 grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, three of his four children and their spouses, Susan and Frank LoPiccolo of Newtown; Mary Ann McNulty of Ridgefield; and John F. Jr and Kelly McNulty of Barrington, Ill.; his sister, Mary Anne Omundsen; his 11 grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews survive him. Mr McNulty also leaves behind his loyal golden retriever.
His daughter Elizabeth Briscoe predeceased him.
Calling hours will be on Tuesday, March 7, from 4 to 7 pm, at Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street in Newtown.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, March 8, at 10 am, in St Rose of Lima Church, 46 Church Hill Road in Newtown. Interment will follow in Newtown Village Cemetery, 22 Elm Drive.
