Time Change For Girls' Hoops; Game Kicks Off Busy Night For NHS Athletics
Newtown High School’s girls’ basketball team’s Class LL state playoff second round contest, on the road against Mercy of Middletown, will take place at 5 pm tonight, March 6. The game was originally listed to have a 7 pm start time as is listed in The Bee’s March 6 print edition coverage of Nighthawks. The No. 14 Nighthawks defeated No. 19 Conard in the first round. Mercy, the third seed in the bracket, defeated No. 30 East Hartford in the opening round. This is a rematch of the 2012 championship game, in which then ninth-seeded Newtown edged No. 8 Mercy 44-42. The winner of this year’s battle advances to take on either sixth-seeded EO Smith or No, 22 Fairfield Ludlowe in the Tuesday, March 10, quarterfinal round, currently set for a 7 pm tipoff.
Also tonight, the South-West Conference boys’ swimming championships will unfold at Masuk High in Monroe, beginning a 6 pm.
The 51st Annual New England Interscholastic Wrestling Championships are scheduled for March 6–7, at North Andover High School in North Andover, Mass. The competition features the top individual State Open place winners from participating New England states Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. The lineup includes State Open champions Joe Accousti and Anthony Falbo from Newtown High.
The postseason continues on Monday, March 9, as the boys’ basketball state playoffs get going. The No. 16 Nighthawks host No. 17 Kennedy of Waterbury for a 7 pm first-round contest; this is a rematch of last year’s playoff opener, won by host Kennedy. The winner will visit top-ranked Fairfield Prep in the second round at 7 pm on March 11.
