Gymnasts Perform In Class L Championships
Newtown High School’s gymnastics team competed in the Class L state championships at Pomperaug High School in Southbury on March 1. The Nighthawks, with 128.875 points, placed sixth among eight schools. Southington, with 138.375 points, won the championship.
Newtown’s Elisha Wilson scored an 8.65 on the vault, an 8.8 in the uneven bars, and an 8.6 on the balance beam. Kaitlyn Tumney had an 8.5 on the vault, a 6.8 on the bars, and an 8.7 for her performance on the floor. Anna Jannott scored an 8.35 for her effort on the vault, a 7.3 on bars, 7.5 on the beam, and 8.3 on the floor. Meagan Foy had an 8.35 for her effort on the vault, a 7.2 on bars, and an 8.0 on the beam. Cameron Vazquez scored a 7.7 on the beam and an 8.2 for her floor exercise. Samantha Olah had an 8.275 for her floor exercise.
Wilson, Tumney, and Jannott all qualified for the State Open, scheduled to take place in New Milford on Saturday, March 8.
