Atkinsons Compete In Conference Championships

Newtown sisters Abby and Emma Atkinson, both collegiate swimmers, competed in conference championships February 20-21.

Abby is a junior who swims at Bucknell University, in Lewisburg, PA. She swam three individual events at the Patriot League Championships and broke the school record in the 200-yard backstroke in preliminaries with a time of 2:00.24. She placed third overall in the event at the finals. The junior also placed third in the 200 IM with a time of 2:04.76 and fifth in the 100 backstroke in 56.79, and ranks among the top Bucknell swimmers of all-time in those events.

Abby Atkinson earned All Patriot League First Team honors. Bucknell placed third as a team in the meet.

Emma Atkinson is a freshman at at John Carroll University in Ohio and competed at the OAC (Ohio Athletic Conference) Championships the University of Akron (John Carroll was runner-up as a team). She reached the finals in all three of her events and competed in the championship heat in two events. In the 400 IM she placed fifth place with a time of 5:01.37. In the 200 breaststroke she earned a tie for sixth place with a time of 2:36.21. In the 100 breaststroke she placed ninth with a time of 1:13.16.
