Creativity was on full display, and on the move, during the Cub Scout Pack 270 Pinewood Derby, at Newtown Congregational Church, on February 25. Wooden cars — 59 of them — designed with customized paint jobs, were each raced four times during a morning and afternoon at the four-lane track.

Car handler Josh Whiteley was in charge of setting up each four-car race and letting them drop down the slope and toward the finish line where scouts waited and gathered the finishers. Ron Poidomani assisted in setting up the cars, and John Oldi served as the announcer. Results were projected onto a screen in the dimly-lit room as family members watched the excitement unfold.

Each car had its own touch. There was a NASA racer, one decked out with the Philadelphia Eagles logo and even a goal post sticking up from the back, a car that looked like a block of holey Swiss cheese, R2-D2, one with a dinosaur theme, and a car with flames.

This marked the first year girls were allowed in the dens with the boys and Molly Whitlow is a scout mom with a daughter, Angela, and son, Aiden, in the troop. Aiden is in his third year and is a Wolf and Angela is in her first and is a Lion.

“It keeps us busy,” Whitlow said of having two children in Cub Scouts. Whiteley said the scouts come up with their own paint scheme. The younger scouts need more help and the older children use tools to design their cars on their own.

In the end, there is lots of fun — and there are many winners with cars recognized for their design and speed in each of the six dens.

“They look forward to this all year long. This is probably the biggest event for the scouts during the year,” said Gary Salce, Den 14 leader and race master in his fourth year involved with the Pinewood Derby.
