Newtown Skiers Help Team Win State Championship
The co-op of Pomperaug/Newtown boys ski race team won the State Open Championship race on March 2 by beating out rivals Fairfield Prep by seven seconds.
On the boys' side, 15 teams in the state qualified to compete in race. Each team could race ten boys and the top six scores counted toward team score. Newtown scorers for the race were Nick Jacobs (third), Andrew Jacobs (ninth), Matt Jacobs (12th), and Tyler Fralley (64th). Kyle Fralley took a hard crash in his first run but came back strong with his second run; both runs have to be completed to qualify for scoring.
For the girls, 14 teams qualified. The Pomperaug/Newtown girls' team finished fourth overall. Newtown freshman Lauren Jacobs was the team's top scorer, finishing fifth.
The Pomperaug/Newtown boys led the league in regular-season racing with a 26-1 overall record. They ended up in a three-way tie for first place in Class L with Fairfield Prep and Staples of Westport — all with a 13-1 record in the Large School Division.
The Boys also bested Weston and Barlow to take the South-West Conference overall title. Individual SWC honors went to Nick Jacobs (second), Andrew Jacobs (fourth), Matt Jacobs (sixth), and Kyle Fralley (ninth).
The Girls were 21-6 overall and 9-4 in Class L which was good for fifth place. In SWC competition, the girls also beat Weston and Barlow to be SWC champions. Individual SWC honors went to SWC individual champ Lauren Jacobs.
The league awarded All-State Honors to: Alec Zackin (Pomperaug), and Nick Jacobs and Lauren Jacobs. All-State Honorable Mention was awarded to Andrew Jacobs.
