Thanks For The Memories
Thanks For The Memories
To the Editor:
As a native Newtowner, âThe Way We Wereâ often brings back memories, as did the photo of February 26 of the former St Johnâs rectory in Sandy Hook. It still stands, although somewhat changed, next to the diner.
I have never been in that house. but from 1934 through 1935 my mother lived there with her parents and sister. My grandparents were the caretakers for the priests who served St Johnâs, and growing up I heard many stories of their life there. Apparently the two priests they served were young men and well-liked by their parishioners, and rarely âat homeâ for meals, being invited out. Mom said that Rev Taft was an avid fisherman and baseball player, very outgoing, and called my grandmother âMomâ Elliott. Rev Langlands was a bit older and quieter but no less likeable.
When my parents were married at St Rose in 1935, both Episcopal priests attended the wedding and reception. In 1965 it was my pleasure to host a 30th anniversary party for Mom and Dad, and Rev Langlands, was among the surprise guests. Rev Taft couldnât attend but sent congratulations.
Thanks for the photo and yet another reminder of my familyâs deep connection to Newtown.
