Petition Requests 'Fast Tracking' Road Work On Honey, Nutmeg Lanes
Petition Requests âFast Trackingâ Road Work On Honey, Nutmeg Lanes
By John Voket
From the perspective of residents living in the area of Honey Lane, driving conditions are not so sweet. As a result, signatures representing âvirtually every householdâ on Honey and Nutmeg Lanes were presented to the Legislative Council March 3 on a petition calling for the town to fast-track road repairs and improvements in the neighborhood.
Currently, improvement work in the area, which is located in the far southeastern section of town near the Monroe line, is several years out in the townwide schedule of road projects, according to Highway Department documentation.
The text of the petition reads: âWe the undersigned residents of Honey and Nutmeg Lanes urge the Town of Newtown to put our roads on the âfast trackâ for a complete renovation including resurfacing and new drainage systems. It has been over 16 years since these roads were improved in any way and the condition of the roads has deteriorated to such a point that they are hazardous to automobiles, pedestrians and cyclists.â
Organizer Joanne Marcinek said that the â53 signatures represent virtually every household in the neighborhood.â
Public Works Director Fred Hurley was in a town department head staff meeting, and was not immediately available to confirm the 16-year claim in the petition. Ms Marcinek said she and some neighbors planned to present a copy of the petition and signatures to the Board of Selectmen by early April.
The council accepted the petition with no discussion.
