Ode To

Dr Seuss

By Shannon Hicks

If Dr Seuss

were alive this week

his birthday cake

might make him say Eek!

Adorned with pretty candles

surrounded by bows and gifts

100 little specs of light

would have given him a lift.

A birthday boy on Tuesday.

He’d smile and say “Oh wow,

And look at all my books—

Kids still read them now.

Let’s celebrate my birthday!

My one-hundredth is today!

Green eggs and ham for dinner tonight!

It’s silly, it’s fun, hooray!”

Booth Library was the place

for kids and grown-ups alike

with a party honoring Dr Seuss

in the early of Tuesday night.

Dinner was so easy

someone cooked a ham.

I saw bread and rolls and butter…

But was there any jam?

There were eggs of green,

some orange juice too,

and a lovely group of girls,

put a Seuss show on too.

The play was short

and full of laughs,

no one noticed

if there were gaffes.

Resident Leland Kellogg

adapted Bill Shakespeare

(it’s probably just as well

he wasn’t around to hear).

The play the girls had offered

was short and sweet and swell.

People seemed to like it.

They laughed, and clapped as well.

Books to color

and crayons galore

continued the fun,

but wait! there’s more!

Before the fun was over

before one’s eye was bat,

one more guest burst through the door,

Who else but The Cat in The Hat?!
