Celiac Sprue Support Group

DANBURY — A special meeting of the Danbury Celiac Support Group with Kenneth Fine, MD, a nationally known gastroenterologist and clinical researcher form Dallas, Texas, will take place on Monday, March 19, at 7:30 pm at the Center for Behavioral and Mental Health on Lake Avenue, Danbury.

The topic will be “Diagnosis of Gluten Sensitivity in the 21st Century: Time for a Change.”

Dr Fine is director of Finer Health and Nutrition, EnteroLab, and the Intestinal Health Institute, and has made critical advances in testing methods and evaluations of the chronic digestive condition called celiac sprue disease (CD), microscopic colitis, and dermatitis herpetiformis (DH). He will explain a new method of measuring dietary nutrient malabsorption, improved diagnostic tests to detect sensitivity of the immune system to gluten, milk, eggs, yeast, and other allergenic foods, and a new treatment regimen for colitis.

Celiac Disease is an inherited, autoimmune disease with an intolerance to gluten that results in intestinal disorders such as diarrhea, weight loss, growth failure in children, and other malabsorption problems. Nutritional malabsorption may be the cause of several problems including osteoporosis.

Gluten is the generic name for certain types of proteins contained in wheat, barley, oats, and rye, and derivatives from these grains.   A gluten-free diet for life is the treatment that leads to restoration of health after diagnosis.
