A Flagpole That Is For All Of Us
To the Editor:
It belongs to all of us, that Newtown landmark in the middle of town. The Newtown flagpole is a symbol for many Newtowners. How many times have you given directions using the flagpole as a landmark? How many residents have taken a guest for a drive or walk down Main Street to see the flag proudly flying, or taken a picture for the family album? The flagpole helps define Newtown as classic New England. Each spring and fall, The Newtown Lions and the volunteer fire department join forces to change the flag, from the lighter-weight summer flag to a more hardy winter version, so we can enjoy the flag all year long.
The Flagpole Preservation Committee, consisting of Pat Llodra, Chris Gardner, Steve Bennett, and myself, are now asking that Newtowners join forces to help pay for the restoration of our flagpole. Thank you to all those who have already contributed, and an encouragement to those who have not. No amount is too small. Donations can be sent to:

*Checks may be made payable to Town of Newtown. Memo line on checks should note Flagpole Preservation Fund.
Thanks from all of us for your support.
