The Newtown Earth Day Committee is already making plans for its late April celebration. A recent announcement begins: “We don’t know about you, but with so much snow on the ground … we’re looking forward to spring and Newtown’s Seventh Annual Earth Day Festival.”

The daylong event, which brings together school groups, families, green-minded organizations, food and drink vendors, children’s activities, live music, and more, is slated for Saturday, April 26, between 10 am and 4 pm. It will again be presented on the front lawn of Newtown Middle School. The committee promises “a full day of family fun and learning.”

Heading into its seventh year, the festival “is designed to highlight Newtown’s abundant natural resources, help our community become ‘greener,’ and continue to raise funds for our High School Scholarship.” The committee has donated more than $4,000 toward scholarships during the last three years.

Earth Day Committee member Barbara Toomey also promises children’s activity tables and displays, as well as events throughout the day including birds of prey demonstrations, a drum circle, and other interactive events. She said this year “is our lucky number seven.”

“The event has organically grown over the last six years and we expect at least 4,000 people to drop by the festival,” Ms Toomey said. The Earth Day Committee will soon explore other, larger venues such as Fairfield Hills to hold future events.

For this April she already promises an expanded children’s activities section, and more local music and food, and the possible return of the Fun Bus.

According to NewtownEarthDay.org, the day “promises to be a memorable day for the whole community.”

The website also details the day’s schedule. Sharon Audubon Center will again have a birds of prey exhibit.

“This is your chance to meet one of their hawks and owls up close and personal,” states the website. “Hurt in the wild and now cared for by Sharon Audubon, these magnificent birds are the ambassadors for their species.”

Newtown Lions Club will again conduct its Lose The Litter effort to “clean up Newtown’s streets.” Gift certificates for free ice cream sundaes from Ferris Acres Creamery will be hidden around town. “Be the lucky crew to win one as you tackle the trash,” the club notes.

Sustainable Energy Commission members will also help residents sign up for renewable energy. Those who bring a utility bill to the SEC festival booth can learn from members how to reduce energy costs.

Live music and dance performances featuring ensembles, local bands/musicians on the Earth Day 2014 stage, will run all day.

Food tables with lunch, snacks, beverages, and pizza will also be available, along with a vendor fair. Many merchants, school clubs, and town organizations will all be participating this year’s celebration.
