For the first time in 10 years, the Makos won the Yankee Cluster Swimming Championships at Central Connecticut State University, squaring off against 12 YMCA teams from around the state. A host of Newtown swimmers aided in the win.
In the girlsâ 13-18 age group, Jen Iassogna took second in the 500 freestyle with a new team record time (5:46.47), fourth in the 200 freestyle (2:11.75) and sixth in the 100 freestyle (1:01.18). Amy Robinson had second-place finishes in the 200 freestyle (2:11.44), 100 freestyle (58.10) and 50 freestyle (26.71). And Lizanne Kroon placed fifth in the 500 freestyle (6:14.78), fifth in the 200 freestyle (2:16.88) and ninth in the 100 breaststroke (1:24.11).
Other 13-18 girls with strong meets were Biotta Hung (who had personal best times in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke) and Meaghan Dawley (who had season best times all three races in which she was entered).
In the boysâ 13 to 18 age group, AJ Kiss led the way with second-place finishes in the 200 individual medley (2:29.51), 200 freestyle (2:10.87) and 100 backstroke (1:08.67) ⦠all personal best times. Â
In the girls 11 and 12 age group (which took first place overall), Marlene Kroon scored well with a fourth in the 50 breaststroke (38.59), 10th in 50 butterfly (33.69), and 12th in 200 freestyle (2:26.42. Emma Whitley-Rodriguez had personal bests in the 100 and 50 freestyles.
For the boysâ 11 and 12 age group (which also took first place overall), Matt Iassogna finished second in the 100 butterfly (1:03.64 â setting a new team record and securing a Top 16 time in Connecticut), second in the 50 butterfly (29.21) and fourth in the 50 backstroke (33.29). Abben Hung took seventh in the 50 backstroke (39.16) and ninth in the 50 breaststroke (40.68) as Christian Edwards van Muijen posted solid times in the 50 freestyle and the 50 butterfly.
And in the 9-10 year old girls, Jaclyn Daily had a great meet with three season-best times in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 50 backstroke.
