Mark Your Calendars! The sixth annual NYS Dinner Dance Auction is Saturday, March 12, at the Fireside Inn at 7 pm. Tickets are $40 and available at NYS.

Talent Show Auditions

Auditions will be held for the annual NYS Talent Show on Thursday, April 7, from 3 to 6 pm, and on Saturday, April 9, from 9 to 11 am, in the Alexandria Room at Edmond Town Hall.

There is a $5 registration fee. Acts need to be two-in-a-half minutes or shorter. Call to schedule an audition time by March 25. The Talent Show will take place on Friday, May 13, at 7 pm, at Newtown Middle School.

Individual Youth and Family Counseling Available! Call for further information.

Moms Groups

Moms of Multiples next meet on Friday, March 18, at the Methodist Church Hall from 10 to 11 am. There is no charge for this group.

Parents Groups

Newtown Parent Connection â Next forum will be Wednesday, March 18. Visit the Parent Connection website at www.newtownparentconnection.org for further information.

Hope And Support Group â Parents with questions or concerns about their childâs possible or confirmed involvements with substances are invited to attend the Hope and Support Group. Meetings are Mondays from 7:30 to 9:30 pm in the Parentsâ Corner. All are welcome.

Youth Programs

HYSAB will meet on Monday, March 7, at 5:30 pm.

MYSAB will meet on Monday, March 7, in Room A-10 at Newtown Middle School. The meeting will run from 2:15 to 3:30 pm so members may take the late bus home if needed. There will be a guest speaker and we will continue work on our project.

NYCAAP Aids Awareness group for high school students â Meets Wednesdays at 7:30 pm at NYS.

NO SUDS will meet Thursdays at NHS from 2 to 3 pm in room A-111.

Children of Divorce â Grades 1 through 6 meets first and third Monday of the month. Next meetings are March 7 and 21 from 6 to 7:15 pm. This is an interactive group using tools such as games and art therapy. Call for further information.

SibShops â Grades 1 through 6. Meets the last Monday of the month from 5 to 7 pm. The next meeting will be March 28 and is ongoing through May.

There is no fee for either Children of Divorce or SibShops.

Why Gun Violence Is Higher In The US

I want to clarify something that was not clear in my letter. Newtown DOES have an affordable housing plan, put together with the aid of the Council of Governments (COG) in 2022 and approved by the LC that year. The strategies in that plan are to "encourage", "support", "explore", "promote" various aspects of state and local affordable housing programs. Those strategies are largely repeated in the Housing Chapter of the Plan of Conservation and Development being finalized now. Newtown needs to measure its performance against those strategies and refine them to reflect the current situation and evaluate whether we are eligible for a moratorium on 8-30(g) projects if we have met the criteria. It's a question of being more specific and more rigorous in what we as a community would like to see to address this real and serious need, rather than to be on our heels when a developer proposes a project on their terms. An independent look outside the application process would be best for that. Thank you. Peter.

Discusses Affordable Housing

I on Glover Ave. walk my two Labs every morning and evening. Drivers are constantly cutting me off at the shopping center entrance and other driveways. There is no understanding of pedestrians rights. Drives make left turns onto Queen when its forbidden. Most cars cruse right thru the crosswalks without stopping for pedestrians. The Police have not issued one citation nor even a warming for crosswalk violations. The situation is out of control and now a loved resident, Pete, and a pet, Coby have been killed. Time for a plan. The problem is not Intersections, nor traffic, the problem 98s drivers and lack of enforcement. The plan need to create a culture that drivers obey speed limits and honor pedestrians right of ways. Isn't that the job of the Police Department and The Police Commission, to protect Newtowns citizens. This is a call to action.
