Taking Steps To Foil A Scammer
The following letter has been received for publication:
To the Editor:
[On February 23] we received a phone call which was clearly a scam and verified as such by Spectrum. The caller said that “Spectrum and Comcast had joined” and was offering a promotion to “specific clients.”
They offered a discount of up to 30 percent off the monthly bill (which is now exceedingly high) for a period of 24 months, beginning in April. To take advantage of this promo it was required that you pay $247 up-front immediately — and this should be paid via electronic check, now. A strange, unusual request. There was no mail promo, only a phone call.
When asked who the “specific clients” might be, the caller said it was people such as ourselves who paid bills on time and did not owe anything.
When asked if Spectrum would back this up if I called them, the caller said that Spectrum would not say there was a promotion, making me suspicious immediately.
This indicated they were lying, and I immediately called Spectrum to report what was happening. I am concerned that the callers (scammers) now have our Spectrum account number and even knew how much our monthly payment for Spectrum services are. It seemed important to contact your office to report this.
I asked for the caller’s phone number, which he gave to me saying he was with the Billing Dept at Spectrum. Spectrum denies any such promo and said no one would ever reach out by phone to make such an offer.
It is always done by mail.
Yours,
Billie (and Martin) Feinberg
