Playoff Update: Basketball Teams Host, Swimmers At Masuk, Hockey Rematch With Wilton, Saturday Events Postponed

Newtown High School’s girls’ and boys’ basketball teams continue postseason action with state playoff games on their home court. The boys' swim team gets ready for the conference championship, the hockey team will have a rematch with Wilton, and Saturday competitions have been postponed. Here is a look upcoming Nighthawk postseason action:

The girls' basketball team, seeded fifth in the Class LL bracket and coming off a first-round win over No. 28 Manchester, will entertain No. 12 Wethersfield in a second-round tilt tonight, Friday, March 1, at 7 pm.

On the boys’ hardwood, the Nighthawks are seeded 11th in Division III and welcome No. 22 Capital Prep of Hartford for a tourney opener on Tuesday, March 5; tipoff is set for 6 pm. NHS defeated Capital Prep during the regular season. The winner earns a March 7 trip to Naugatuck for a 7 pm second-round battle.

In the pool, the Nighthawk swimmers look to make a splash in their South-West Conference championships. The diving portion of the competition was held on February 27 and the swimming events will be held at Masuk High in Monroe on March 1, beginning at 5 pm.

On the ice, the NHS hockey team will take on Wilton in a Division III playoff opener as the Warriors visit Danbury Ice Arena on Monday, March 4 for a 7:40 faceoff.

The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference announced on Friday that, due to the forecast of inclement weather, changes have been made to state championship events originally scheduled for Saturday, March 2.

The cheerleading competition, which will be held at Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven, has been moved to Sunday, March 3, starting at 9 am.

The gymnastics State Open has been pushed to Wednesday, March 6 and will take place at New Milford High at 4 pm.
