Great Hollow YMCA To Host Open House For Home School Families
NEW FAIRFIELD â On Thursday, March 6, the Great Hollow Wilderness School will host an open house from 9 am until noon.
The school, which is a branch of the Regional YMCA, offers many programs for home schooled students ages 4-16. Located on 890 wooded acres in New Fairfield, the wilderness school provides the perfect backdrop to teach children about nature, the environment as well as offer programs that build self esteem. Two of the programs offered to home school students at Great Hollow are the Whole Earth Home School and Adventure Home School programs.
The Whole Earth Home School program consists of several weekly classes focused on nature based education or adventure leadership. The staff at Great Hollow develops long term mentoring relationships with the students while helping them to develop a deeper connection to nature, other people, and themselves.
The Adventure Home School program allows students to participate in a variety of new and exciting activities which are designed to build group cohesion and self esteem in addition to exposing students to new and exciting activities. The program runs for eight weeks
At the open house, parents and children are invited to take a guided nature walk, participate in nature awareness games and team building initiatives and explore some of the beautiful places kids use during the programs. Additionally, visitors will get a chance to meet some current students who can provide insight about the Great Hollow experience.Â
Great Hollow is an experiential education and nature center. Its programs focus on developing leadership abilities and teaching students how to face challenges.
