Track And Field Athletes Shine In State Open

Newtown High School’s indoor track and field teams competed in the State Open at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven on February 22. The Nighthawk boys placed eighth and both squads had strong individual and relay performances. The State Open combines teams from all classes with the state champions from the class meets as well as the next 14 best performances from the class meets qualifying to compete at the Open.

Soheib Dissa won the 1000 for the third year in a row, clocking in at 2:29.28. The 1600 sprint medley relay was second as Danniel Teixeira, Bryce Maddox, Elias Brady, and Dissa finished in 3:39.31. Brady placed eighth in the long jump competition with a 21-02.50.

Aashni Shetti finished fourth in the long jump with a 17-01.75, (qualifying for the New England Championships). The 4x800 relay team of Natalie delCampo, Natalie McLean, Clare Csazsar, and Rachael Albrecht was seventh in 10:03.31. Lola Kessler placed 11th in the pole vault event clearing the bar at 9 feet. Natalie McLean ran the 1000 and finished 14th in a time of 3:10.73.
