Now that major league baseball spring training camps are open, it should be time for all local softball players to start turning their attention towards softball by, first, taking their bats out of storage, oiling their gloves, and getting in a few practice swings in the backyard to grease up that old rusty gate.

And, second, by signing up.

The Newtown Sunday Slo-Pitch, Newtown Weeknite Slo-Pitch, and the Newtown Women’s Slo-Pitch Softball Leagues are all gearing up for the spring by scheduling their first signups, their first meetings, and by putting out the call to new players.

To wit:

The Newtown Sunday Slo-Pitch League will hold its first meeting on Thursday, March 9, at 7:30 pm, at the Edmond Town Hall. President Tom Egan is expecting 12 teams to participate this year, but new players are invited to attend to hopefully fill out spots in rosters.

The Newtown Weeknite Slo-Pitch League – which plays on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Treadwell Park – will meet on Wednesday, March 22, at the Newtown Middle School (room to be announced). For further information, call Chris Dennis at 270-9457.

And the Newtown Women’s Softball League will be having sign-ups on Thursday, March 9, and Wednesday, March 22, from 6 to 8 pm at the Newtown Middle School cafeteria. In order to be eligible to play, you must be 18 years of age (by June 1), a Newtown resident (or work in Newtown). Proof of residency must be shown.

Also, if one individual plans to register an entire team, a roster must be submitted with proof of residency for each player. A $5 registration fee is required.

Call Joanne Didonato, league president, at 426-5733 for further information.
