Mary (Antal) Deak

Mary (Antal) Deak, 83, of Bridgeport, beloved wife of Steve “Pete” Deak, died February 27 in St Vincent’s Medical Center, Bridgeport.

She was the sister of Andrew Antal of Newtown.

Raised in Fairfield, the daughter of Steve and Elizabeth Antal, Mrs Deak had been a Bridgeport resident for more than 60 years. She was an avid gardener and had a rose garden and vegetable garden that was admired by everyone. She was famous for her nut and poppyseed cakes that she made for her family and friends at the holidays.

She was a member of St Ann’s Ladies Guild and a longtime member of the Black Rock Preservation Group.

In addition to Pete, her husband of 62 years, Mrs Deak is survived by her daughter, Linda Smey of Bridgeport; her son, Albert Deak of Fairfield; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; another brother, Frank Antal of Stratford; sisters, Rose Sabre and Betty Vetrosky, both of Fairfield; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. She was pre-deceased by a brother, Steve Antal.

Funeral services were held on March 1 in the Frank Polke & Son Funeral Home, 1546 Fairfield Avenue, Bridgeport, and in St Ann’s Church, Brewster Street, Bridgeport. Interment followed in Lawncroft Burial Park.
