A lone female suspect was apprehended by Newtown Police and their K-9 Aris shortly after a 1:45 pm robbery Monday, February 26, at the Union Savings Bank on the corner of Church Hill and Commerce Roads.

According to police, Kathlynn A. Achilles, 26, of 3 Erin Lane in Sandy Hook handed a teller a note that demanded money.

After receiving an unspecified amount of cash, police say Achilles fled the bank on foot. She was last seen wearing a brown hoodie and white pants.

Local officers immediately converged on the area, and began searching for the woman who had been seen going into a wooded area near the bank.

Officers began their search along Commerce Road and the area behind St Rose School on Church Hill Road.

As a result, police alerted schools in the area and St Rose School, Newtown Middle School, and Hawley Elementary School were temporarily placed on precautionary lock-in status.

Achilles was soon spotted in a wooded area by pursuing police and the K-9 near the eastern end of Grand Place, a residential subdivision near Commerce Road. Police then took her into custody apparently without incident and she was transported to Newtown Police Headquarters for arrest processing.

At the time of apprehension, police say the suspect was wearing white pants a dark colored shirt. The suspect was found to be in possession of a small pocket knife.

Within a very short distance from where the suspect was located (less than 30 feet) police say they, located a plastic bag containing approximately $2,700 and a brown hooded sweatshirt.

Officers then made a visual identification of the suspect and the suspect's clothing using the Union Savings Bank surveillance video.

Achilles was charged with robbery second degree (1 count), larceny third degree (1 count), threatening second degree (1 count), possession of narcotics (2 counts), and possession of drug paraphernalia (1 count). She is currently being held in lieu of a $100,000 cash or surety bond with a court date of Tuesday, February 27 (provided that she does not make bond).

Police are asking witnesses or anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact Detective Lieutenant Richard Robinson by phone at 203-426-5841, or by e-mail at richard.robinson@newtown-ct.gov.
