IRAN SHRINES TALK AT LACMA MARCH 2

AVV 2-20 #729585

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) will present a lecture, “The Ardabil Shrine, Sufis, Shi’ites and Shahs: The Great Shrines of Iran 1500–1650” on Sunday, March 2, at 2 pm.

Canby of the British Museum presents this lecture on the Ardabil Shrine, the dynastic heart of the Safavid Dynasty, and two other major shrines, the Shrine of Imam Riza in Mashhad and the Shrine of Fatimeh Ma’sumeh in Qum.

The gifts and renovations of the Safavid shahs to the shrines bear witness to the important role of these shrines in establishing Shiism as the state religion of Iran and the Safavid shahs as its protectors.

The free program takes place in the Bing Theater; no reservations. LACMA is at 5905 Wilshire Boulevard. For information, www.lacma.org or 323-857-6000.
