While not delivering the snow dump that was forecast, Winter Storm Oaklee is delivering a frozen crust coating roadways and surfaces prompting closures of all Connecticut state offices, as well as Newtown Municipal Center, town schools, and the community center.

After a Thursday evening Code RED message to town staffers holding off openings until 10 am, a Friday morning notification just after 8 am announced closures of all municipal offices for the day.

Just before 9:30 Thursday evening, Governor Ned Lamont ordered all executive branch state office buildings closed on Friday due to the winter storm. All level 2 state employees who are able to telework were directed to do so for the duration of the storm-related closures.

About an hour earlier, The Newtown Bee announced all Newtown schools would also be closed Friday. And at about 10 am Friday, Newtown Community Center Director Matt Ariniello amended plans to open at 11 am, announcing the facility would instead be closed for the day.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect Friday until 3 pm, with a total combined snow and sleet accumulations of 1 to 3 inches expected. Ice accumulations of around a tenth of an inch should be expected.

If you must drive, slow down and use caution.

Newtown Police had responded to a few isolated traffic incidents since early Friday morning, and local ambulance volunteers responded to at least one lift assist after a resident slipped on an icy surface.

The Newtown Highway Department had laid down salt and sand ahead of the overnight precipitation, and began clearing town roadways as soon as the outside temperature hit 32 degrees after 9 am.

A frozen crust coating roadways and surfaces has prompted closures of all Connecticut state offices, as well as Newtown Municipal Center, town schools, and the community center.
