Newtown Girls Go Unbeaten, Win Their Division

Newtown’s fifth-grade girls’ travel basketball team won the Fairfield County Basketball A Division and went undefeated this winter. The girls finished the regular season with wins over Westport and Shelton last week, to finish the year 20-0. They were asked to move up a grade for the league tournament and play against sixth-grade teams — quite an accomplishment for the ten girls in their first year playing together.

Erin Burns, Julia Hakins, Alexis Mason, and Kira Smith control the boards, with Julia Doyle and Lauren Carrino feeding them from the wing. Haley Harkins and Marcella Daily set screens and are intense on defense, and both are potential scoring threats. Rylee Mulligan and Sarah Houle share point guard duties and run the offense well.
