Trinity Episcopal Church will hold Stations of the Cross in front of its building each Wednesday during Lent.

The objective of the stations is to help everyone to make a spiritual pilgrimage through contemplation of the Passion of Christ by traveling the path Jesus walked on his way to the eventual redemption of humanity.

From the earliest of days, followers of Jesus told the story of his passion, death, and resurrection. When pilgrims went to see Jerusalem, they were anxious to see the sites where Jesus had been, and the sites became important holy connections with Jesus. Eventually, following in the footsteps of the Lord, along the way of the cross, became a part of the pilgrimage visit.

The stations, as they are known today, came about when it was no longer easy or even possible to visit the holy sites. In the 1500s, villages all over Europe started creating “replicas” of the way of the cross, with small shrines commemorating the places along the route in Jerusalem. Eventually, these shrines became the set of 14 stations common today.

As Lent begins, Trinity will be offering an opportunity for the parish to reunite and celebrate the Stations of the Cross outdoors every Wednesday evening. Those who attend will also be encouraged to lead one or more of the stations to help make this a community pilgrimage.

The Stations will begin at 5:30 pm outside the front steps of Trinity, at 36 Main Street, so all who are interested can join.

A fire pit will also be provided, to help warm everyone. Social distancing and mask-wearing will be required.

As people struggle to connect with each other in these times, this is an opportunity to join in person again and prepare for the coming redemptive powers of Jesus Christ. The gathering front of the church building is a visible sign of being present in God’s neighborhood — offering the light of hope in the world.

All are invited to prayerfully consider incorporating this devotion and time of self-reflection into their Lenten journey.
