Taizé For Lent On Wednesdays At Trinity Newtown

Every Wednesday in Lent, beginning February 29, there will be a service of Taizé at 7:30 pm in Trinity Church, 36 Main Street. This style of worship consists of simple chants sung repeatedly, rich silence, glowing candlelight, and prayers of intercession.

“We are accustomed to a fast pace of life filled with noise, activity, work, talking, texting, and transporting. Entering into this worship requires us to leave our hurry behind, slow down, calm our spirits, be silent and enjoy a leisurely time with God,” said Trinity Music Minister Fiona Smith Sutherland, who leads a volunteer Taizé Choir and instrumentalists of the Taizé Ensemble in the beautiful, candlelit nave of Trinity Church.

This tradition of musical worship began years ago in the ecumenical French monastic community called Taizé. Held at Trinity Episcopal Church in the darkened, richly resonant space, Newtown’s Taizé services provide an uncomplicated framework for quiet meditation, reflection, readings and music, she said, adding, “All are encouraged to participate as the spirit moves them, whether that be in song, prayer, or quiet meditation.”

The service is preceded by a Lenten teaching from 6 to 7:15 pm in the Undercroft, titled “Straight Talk About Simple, Just Living,” to which all are welcome.

Trinity Episcopal Church is at 36 Main Street.
