Newtown Wins Jockey Hollow Championship
Newtownâs eighth grade boysâ basketball team won the Jockey Hollow Conference Championship this past week.
Newtown beat Bethel 54-48 on February 16 to advance to the finals on against Jockey Hollow of Monroe the next day. Newtown defeated Jockey Hollow 66-36 to win the championship and close out the season with a 17-1 overall record.
In the title game, starters Ethan Carpenter, Sam Czel, Mason Melillo, Dillon Palumbo, and Ryan Shaw came out hot as the team took a 38-14 lead in the first half. Matt Elias, Jared Pearson, Kieran Lynch, and Hayes Kelchner all came off the bench to help hold down the Monroe team. Shaw was chosen as one of the league Most Valuable Players.
