Addressing Traffic Problems Now

To the Editor:

You describe [in Editorial Ink Drops, “Newtown’s Traffic Problems”, 2/17/12] drivers that “career through what is perhaps Newtown’s most hazardous residential neighborhood.” You end with “not get hung up on a temporary speed bump.” In mid-article you indicate that temporary speed bumps are not the solution. Certainly part of the solution might be permanent speed tables on Queen Street and on other streets particularly in the center of town. The judicious use of speed tables has proven effective in many areas, and I would be happy to drive and show you how other towns such as Westport and Stamford have used them effectively. I am glad to hear that Newtown is moving forward on the use of speed tables

There is definitely a problem with excessive speed on Queen Street and in many areas of town, and other long-term steps need to be taken. If you would like to help, then support efforts to remedy the situation. The inertia on this issue is often the result of those well-intentioned people who take the high ground of “long-term solutions” and prevent the small changes that over time will improve the general environment for all involved. I have always lived in congested areas and am not at all concerned about the volume of traffic moving down Queen Street. I expect to have traffic on a thru street in the center of town. I do object to the speed at which the traffic moves through this area. I walk and ride my bike constantly up and down Queen Street and observe first-hand on a daily basis the irresponsible behavior of drivers who exceed the speed limit by 20 mph. I lived on a very busy cut-through street in Stamford and saw how effectively speed tables slowed traffic with one right in front of my house.

Yes, the town should look at other traffic problems, but some action needs to be taken now. I am glad that the Police Commission is moving forward with not only continued enforcement, but also the temporary speed tables, to see how they work and how they actually affect other roads and intersections. I support the addition of sidewalks to make it possible for the families on all of the residential streets surrounding town to walk to town, and to enjoy the beauty of Newtown, and what it has to offer. Every aspect of the problem of pedestrian safety and illegal speeding should be explored and addressed as funds allow.

The Bee is a very positive part of the community and that includes The Pleasance. My wife and I and grandkids have often enjoyed visits including the Peter Rabbit house. It would be nice to walk there with our grandchildren, but when they are with us, we drive there because of the unsafe conditions, including speeders. What do you say, we all work together to accomplish each small step along the way to a better community.
