The Wilton Y Wahoos – with nine Newtown residents helping lead the way – captured Connecticut YMCA state swimming championships February 3-5 in girls, boys and combined categories.

In the 13-14 girls division, Dana Gnerre (14) placed first in the 50 freestyle (25.75), first in the 100 butterfly (1:01.85), second in the 100 freestyle (55.45) and 11th in the senior 400 individual medley (4:58.66). Gnerre also anchored the winning 200 freestyle relay and the second place 200 medley relay.

In the 15 and over girls division, Maricate Conlon finished second in the 200 backstroke (2:13.35), fifth in the 100 backstroke (1:03.94) and 12th in the senior 400 individual medley (4:59.71). Conlon also swam in the 200 medley relay, which placed fifth.

In the 15 and over division, Sally Tabler placed 11th in the 200 butterfly (2:21.94). In the 13-14 division division, Megan Baylis placed ninth in the 100 breaststroke (1:20.23). In the 9-10 division, Kelley Baylis was sixth in the 100 individual medley (1:18.23) and ninth in the 100 breaststroke (1:30.10). She also swam on the 200 Free Relay team that placed 6th.

Leading the boys in the 13-14 division, Andrew Golankiewicz finished second in the 200 freestyle (1:57.04), second in the 100 backstroke (1:03.31), second in the senior 500 freestyle (5:18.58) and third in the 200 backstroke (2:11.54). Golankiewicz was lead-off swimmer in the 200 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay, both taking 2nd place.

Also in the 13-14 division, Ryan Cahalane finished fourth in the 200 freestyle (2:03.50), fourth in the 100 freestyle (54.13), fifth in the 200 backstroke (2:22.15) and fifth in the senior 500 freestyle (5:31.82). He also swam in the second place 200 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay.

In the boys 15 and over division, Kevin Cahalane was third in the 50 freestyle (24.68), fifth in the 100 backstroke (1:07.29), sixth in the 100 freestyle (55.79) and 10th in the senior 500 freestyle (5:48.90). He also swam the anchor leg in the winning 200 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay.

In the boys 11-12 division, Conor Deveney finished second in the 100 backstroke (1:07.77), sixth in the 200 freestyle (2:15.91) and 12th in the 100 butterfly (1:13.03). Deveney also swam in the third-place 200 medley relay and in the sixth-place 200 freestyle relay.
