Newtown Bank Sponsoring Several Relay For Life Teams

Momentum is building and volunteers have been busy organizing for the 2008 Newtown Relay For Life June 7–8 at Newtown High School. Newtown Savings Bank recently presented a check in the amount of $10,000 payable to the “Relay For Life” to be divided up among six surrounding towns participating in the relays including Newtown.

This donation, made by John Martocci, Bill McCarthy and Laura Cole, qualified NSB as an Excalibur Sponsor of the event. Newtown Relay Chair Necole Salvesen accepted the donation on behalf of the Relay For Life of Newtown.

This year’s celebration will highlight an Olympic theme, “One World, One Dream,” as well as the American Cancer Society’s mission statement, “Celebrate — Remember — Fight Back.” In recognition of the fifth anniversary of the Newtown event, the honorary chair panel consists of past cancer survivors and event chairs, Jimmy Zarifis, Jack DeFlumeri, George Arfaras, and Ivette Gerics.

The American Cancer Society’s signature event brings the community together with hundreds of people participating, celebrating survivorship and raising funds for research and programs. Relay offers something for everyone, from the newly diagnosed, to caregivers and friends, to long-term survivors.

The event represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day cancer will be eliminated.

Whether you walk, volunteer, or donate, the local Relay is an opportunity to tell others about the event. Learn more about becoming a volunteer, sponsor, or supporter at the next RFL meeting Thursday, March 13, 7 pm, at Newtown High School. For more information call Necole Salvesen at 948-3878 or e-mail relayforlifeofnewtown@gmail.com.

The American Cancer Society can be reached at 800-ACS-2345 or www.relayforlife.org.
