WSO To Perform Great Gatsby Era ‘The Jazz Age’ Concert, This Weekend At Edmond Town Hall
The Waterbury Symphony Orchestra (WSO) will present “The Jazz Age,” the second of its new Edmond Town Hall Series, on Sunday, February 23, at 4 pm, at Edmond Town Hall, 45 Main Street. The performance will mark the 100th anniversary of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, a novel that famously coined the term “Jazz Age” to describe the exuberant, rebellious spirit of the 1920s.
WSO will be performing favorites from the Jazz Age era including, “I Want to Be Loved by You,” “Runnin’ Wild,” and “I’m Just Wild About Harry!” Organizers say the program is sure to be “the cat’s meow.”
A performance of swinging hits and evocative melodies, The Jazz Age will feature WSO musicians as a “jazz orchestra,” blending unique instrumentation and beloved songs all with the improvisational flair and excitement of the Jazz Age era.
The performance will also feature international soloist Stephanie Harrison, a celebrated vocalist whose powerful voice and captivating stage presence have made her a favorite among audiences worldwide. Harrison’s rendition of timeless jazz standards will take the audience on a journey through the music that defined an era.
WSO Music Director & Conductor Leif Bjaland said he and the musicians are “thrilled to celebrate the 100th anniversary of The Great Gatsby with this exciting performance.
“The Jazz Age was a time of cultural transformation, and we’re honored to bring this period to life through the power of live music. From Gershwin to Ellington, the music of the 1920s was as innovative as it was captivating, and we can’t wait to share it with our community,” he added.
Stephanie Harrison’s soulful, timeless voice has captivated audiences worldwide. With a background spanning big bands, folk, and jazz, she connects through her honest delivery and rich tone.
Harrison was drawn to music from an early age, influenced by her mother’s love of Pavarotti and her father’s admiration for Roberta Flack.
Harrison has performed internationally in the US, Norway, Germany, and France, and fronted A Nordic Sound, an American Jazz Orchestra led by Jens Wendelboe. She contributed vocals to Wendelboe’s Against All Odds on Losen Records.
A founding member and lead vocalist of The Moonrise Cartel, an original folk rock band, she has helped them make waves in Connecticut and beyond, with their music streaming in over 125 countries. The band’s success earned a nomination for the 2024 New England Music Awards’ Rising Stars of CT.
