Hoops Update: Boys Win On Senior Night; Girls Host SWC Opener
Newtown High School’s boys’ basketball team earned a big 42-40 win over Weston on Senior Night, February 20. The Nighthawks honored final-year players Charlie Huegi, Jacob Burden, Harry Depuy, Will Dalton, and Jeremy Doski, and proceeded to pick up a win that could loom large in the conference playoff picture.
The Nighthawks improved to 8-4 in South-West Conference play, bolstering their changes of earning one of the top four spots and a quarterfinal-round home game in the conference tournament. Weston fell to 4-8 in SWC action.
Dalton led the way with 20 points, Depuy scored ten, and Doski added seven. Depuy and Doski pulled down seven rebounds each, and Doski had five assists. Dalton and Doski each had three steals, Huegi came up with two steals, and Depuy blocked two shots.
Newtown will visit Stratford, which is 7-5 in conference play, in the final game of the regular season, on Tuesday, February 24. Tipoff is set for 7 pm. The SWC playoffs are scheduled to begin on February 27.
The SWC girls’ playoffs are underway, and Newtown earned the No. 2 seed and a first-round home game. The Nighthawks are set to host No. 7 Immaculate of Danbury in the quarterfinals, beginning at 1 pm today, Saturday, February 21.
