Two years, two state titles … and a pair of championships in as many weeks for Newtown High School’s wrestling team. The Nighthawks successfully defended their state championship, seven days after claiming a conference crown, easily outscoring runner-up Danbury in the February 20-21 Class LL state meet at Trumbull High School.

The Nighthawks racked up 282.5 points, and Danbury compiled 231. Simsbury and Xavier of Middletown tied for third with 189, and next was Trumbull, which scored 183.

Newtown was well-represented deep in the tourney, as 11 of 14 weight divisions featured Newtown grapplers in the semifinals, and seven Hawks reached the championship matches. At the end of the second day of the tourney, Newtown had four individual champions and a trio of second-place finishers. The Hawks also had a pair of third-place wrestlers and two fourth-place finishers, giving them 11 wrestlers who qualify for the State Open.

“Everybody performed. There’s not one single guy on this team that didn’t win a match in this tournament,” Newtown Coach Chris Bray said.

In the 113 pound weight division championships, Newtown’s Luca Crudo defeated Norwich Free Academy’s Matt Foster in a 5-0 decision. In the 138 category, James Leuci earned a 7-2 decision over Keith Penney of Simsbury. At 152, Joe Accousti scored a 5-3 decision over Adam Angelucci of Trumbull. In the 170 championship, Anthony Falbo defeated Seve Burgos of Xavier, 24-9. Falbo earned the meet's Most Outstanding Wrestler honor.

Newtown’s runner-up wrestlers were Ed Lovely at 126, Alex Stavola at 145, and Andy Hubina at 195.
