John R. Miller, Sr, 84, of North Fort Myers, Fla., husband of Janet Mahanna Yarrish Miller, died February 3 at Heartland Medical Center, Fort Myers. He was born in Bridgeport, September 7, 1929, son of Raymond E. and Mary (Schneider) Metcalf Miller.

In addition to his wife, his children and spouses, Joseph and Susan Miller of Newtown, John Miller, Jr, and Lucia of Goshen, Leona and Matthew Tomascak of Brookfield, Gail and Gilbert Lawrence of New Milford, Gary and Patricia Yarrish of Litchfield, and Laura Miller of Bethany; ten grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren survive him.

Raised in Bridgeport, Mr Miller graduated from Harding High School. He enlisted in the US Navy upon graduation and served ten years during World War II and Korea. He was a member of the US Navy Underwater Demolition Team (UDT).

A carpenter by trade, Mr Miller was a member of Union Local #210 of Danbury. A former resident of Woodbury prior to relocating to Florida 23 years ago, he was a life member of the Newtown and North Fort Myers Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr Miller was a member of the Pine Lake Country Club, which he referred to as “Paradise on Earth.” He enjoyed ocean liner cruises with his wife of 29 years, and will long be remembered for his quick wit and humorous stories. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, February 25, at 10 am, in St Joseph Catholic Church, Brookfield. The family will receive friends in the Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home, 9-11 Granville Avenue, Danbury, Monday, February 24, from 4 to 7 pm. Burial will follow in St Peter's Cemetery, Danbury, with military honors.
