An Eagle Scout Project Builds Roofs For St Rose Cemetery

By Eliza Hallabeck

In late January, Newtown High School student Nick Wolf was awarded the title of Eagle Scout, thanks to a project he completed in early October.

“I had to have a plan,” said the 16-year-old Nick, during a recent visit to The Bee.

Nick said he planned his eagle scout project, coordinated volunteers and donations, and carried it out.

Over the course of two weekends, Nick said three permanent roof structures were built for the cemetery at St Rose of Lima over already existing benches, which, according to Nick’s mom, Barbara Wolf, was a another Eagle Scout’s project during another year.

“I knew St Rose was under construction,” said Nick. “So nothing could be done there.”

The next thing he did, he said, was contact Monsignor Robert Weiss at St Rose.

“To be an Eagle Scout,” said Nick, “one of the requirements is to complete your own community service project.”

After talking to Monsignor Robert Weiss in August of 2007, the first year of the project was spent getting the correct signatures, creating the designs, asking for donations and raising money, Nick said.

“Doing the project itself was the easiest part,” said Nick.

Nick said he joined the cub scouts in 1998 and became a boy scout in September 2003. Since then he says being a scout has “given me skills for the future.” He also said being a scout also gives him leadership skills and helps him to give back to his community.

He said the best part of the project was, “I got to go out there and meet community business owners.”

Local businesses and organizations that helped Nick contribute to the project included Stock Building Supply, Matz Lumber, Wickes Lumber, Rings End Lumber in Bethel, Ben’s Mason Supply & Hardware, Newtown Hardware, the Hatch and Bailey Co., the Knights of Columbus, the Newtown VFW, JK’s Pizza, and Dunkin’ Donuts.

Nick and his mother also said they wanted to thank his assistant scout masters, the scouts and parents of Troop 370, members of the St Rose Parish, and his family and friends for their help, time, and for helping him make the project a success.

The project was completed on October 5 of last year, and he received the rank of Eagle Scout on January 22.
