Defense, Long Range Prowess Lead Girls In SWC Quarterfinals
Five-second inbound violations on back to back Weston possessions, and consecutive three point baskets by Cyleigh Wilson in a span of 1:06 midway through the fourth quarter helped the host Newtown High School girls' basketball team turn a close contest into a 39-28 triumph in the South-West Conference tournament quarterfinals, on February 17.
The third-seeded Nighthawks canned a handful of 3-pointers and held the sixth-seeded Trojans to just one field goal in a first quarter and without a basket from the floor for most of the fourth quarter en route to the victory. The Hawks led 9-3 after one quarter of play, 13-11 at halftime, and 25-21 heading to the fourth.
Newtown was clinging to a 26-23 lead midway through the final stanza when Weston had two possessions to inch closer or tie. Tight defense on a pair of inbound attempts resulted in violations as the Trojans couldn't get the ball into play within five seconds. Wilson proceeded to sink two attempts from long range on Newtown's next two possessions, giving the Nighthawks a 32-23 advantage with 3:27 to play, and the hosts pulled away.
Wilson and Rylee Mulligan both had ten points to lead the Hawks. Cailin Wilson scored six, Ali Kelleher had five, Olyvia Shaw dropped in three, Erin Burns and Kira Smith tacked on two each, and Jackie Matthews added a free throw.
In addition to Cyleigh Wilson's two shots from beyond the arc, Cailin Wilson, Mulligan, and Kelleher all drilled 3-pointers.
Newtown's defense came away with 13 steals, led by four from Shaw, three from Mulligan, and two each from Kelleher and Matthews. Smith, Matthews, and Mulligan all had four rebounds, and Mulligan and Nicki DaPra each blocked a shot.
The Hawks will visit second-seeded Bethel, a 65-60 overtime winner over Kolbe Cathedral of Bridgeport, in the semifinals on Monday, February 20, beginning at 7 pm.
