NHS Animal Concerns Club Gives To The Animal Center

By Eliza Hallabeck

When the Newtown High School Animal Concerns Club members learned of a cat at the Animal Center in need of an operation, the club responded with a fundraiser that brought in $170. On Thursday, February 10, club members met with Animal Concerns Club Director Monica Roberto to give the donation formally to the center.

The cat that inspired the group, Sophie, Ms Roberto said, had a torn leg and the veterinarian said she would need surgery. Learning of the trauma to Sophie’s leg, the club wanted to help. Sophie’s leg ended up being amputated, and the surgery went well. “Within weeks she was hopping around on the couch,” said Ms Roberto.

“Thanks to you guys she is in a very good place,” said Ms Roberto the group.

Due to school cancellations and other weather-related postponements, the Animal Center had received the group’s check before Thursday’s meeting, but it was the first time the group was able to meet with Ms Roberto since the fundraiser.

“It’s a happy ending and it is just so inspiring,” said Ms Roberto.

The happy ending came when Sophie met the woman who would eventually adopt her — at the veterinarian’s office during her surgery.

Future plans for the Animal Concerns Club include a trip to the Farm Sanctuary in Watkins Glen, N.Y., where farm animals are rescued and kept rather than being slaughtered or put down, according Animal Concerns Club parent Lorrie Silber.

Ms Silber said more fundraisers will be in the club’s future, due to all the events and programs the members are planning.
