UU’s Plan Antiracism Workshop

DANBURY — The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Danbury invites the public to participate in “Creating A Jubilee World” Friday, March 4, through Sunday, March 6.

This workshop is designed to help Unitarian Universalist congregations, in partnership with their community, dismantle racism by allowing participants to examine both personal and institutional racism and develop a plan to work for racial justice.

Objectives of the workshop are to:

Increase awareness of racism within the church and the larger community.

Recognize the power/privilege of racism from personal and institutional perspectives.

Identify activities and responses that promote the elimination of racism.

Identify the challenges and barriers to working toward eliminating racism.

Examine denominational values, principles, and purposes in relation to the vision of a Jubilee World.

Begin the process of building an antiracism transformation team.

The workshop will be held Friday evening from 7 to 10 pm, and Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm at Pinney Hall Conference Center on the Westside campus of Western Connecticut State University. Special worship services will be held on Sunday at 9 am and 11 am at Alumni Hall at the WCSU Downtown campus. Refreshments will be served Friday evening. Lunch on Saturday is included with the $35 registration. Student registration is $25. Children aged 12 years and older are welcome to attend as workshop participants.

Registration forms are available at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Danbury, 24 Clapboard Ridge Road, or call 798-994. This event is being co-sponsored by WCSU Student Affairs, the Danbury Coalition for a Community United, and the Association of Religious Communities (ARC).

The workshop will be facilitated by the Rev Chester Mc Call and the Rev Melanie Sullivan. Both are antiracism trainers who present this workshop throughout the nation.

The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Danbury is a religious community founded in 1822 as the Danbury Universalist Church. Unitarian Universalism welcomes people with many different religious backgrounds and all who seek a liberal religious home regardless of race, age, or sexual orientation. Sunday services are currently held at Alumni Hall on the campus of Western Connecticut State University while a new meeting facility at 24 Clapboard Ridge Road is being constructed.
